I bet you all thought I gave up training for the Warrior Dash since I haven’t talked about it for several weeks. Well, if you did, you’d be wrong (I’m talking to you, Mom!). I just thought there was nothing exciting to write about and sort of forgot to keep track of what I was doing on a daily basis. But I’ve been working out and the race is this Saturday!
Here’s a few things I’ve learned this summer about training:
I don’t really like it much. Probably not totally true – I love it when I’m done. And, I do enjoy walking and hiking, especially when it’s nice weather and there’s awesome scenery, like Torrey Pines or La Jolla Cove in San Diego. But around here, it’s hot and humid…or this summer, rainy, and the scenery around the base leaves a lot to be desired, unless you enjoy groundhogs and warehouses. The gym on base is great but it’s hot and sweaty in there and there’s one big guy that drips sweat all over the equipment and continually snorts and clears his throat. Totally gross!
It’s hard to stay on track while on vacation unless you’re a really dedicated, Type-A person (that’s you Becky). I consider myself a Type-C when it comes to exercise. It’s really easy to NOT exercise, especially when you’re on vacation, unless you happen to vacation with your sister-in-law who practically does a daily triathlon! I went to Wisconsin for a week and thankfully my sister-in-law Becky kept me in line. We kayaked, we walked/jogged, we even rode our bikes to the ice cream store and back…now that’s what I’m talkin’ about! Unfortunately, a few other short trips to DC I wasn’t as motivated to hit the hotel gym…but I did walk to the mall and shopped all day, that counts! Sometimes there’s just a lot going on during the day and I don’t make it a priority to exercise while I’m away. That’s why everyone needs to vacation with a Becky! She’ll keep you in line.
Having someone to be accountable to makes you get off your lazy butt and go work out. There are 4 of us that regularly go to the gym 3 days a week and train with our wonderful trainer, Andrew. If we didn’t have that scheduled, I know I for one, would not be doing the exercises he has us do. It just makes it more fun to have other people going through the same misery with you. I hope we keep it up after this Saturday ladies!
I eat more when I work out. I love food…need I say more?
Stay tuned next week for the results of the Warrior Dash, and hopefully a lot of pictures! Wish me luck…I’ll need it climbing over the walls!
