If you think margaritas are the only way to enjoy tequila, think again! The Paloma is here to shake up your summer sipping game with its vibrant and refreshing flavors!

My friend Susan has begged me to post a recipe for a drink with tequila. Apparently she gets really fabulous when she drinks tequila. And since she’s an avid reader of this blog and a huge fan I felt eager to oblige.  But what to make with tequila besides a margarita??? I’ve always loved grapefruit juice with vodka, especially a grapefruit martini or a grapefruit St-Germain martini, so I thought it was about time to make a Paloma.  This one’s for you Susan…go be fabulous!

The traditional Paloma is a tequila based cocktail with grapefruit soda (Fresca or Squirt) and a lime wedge.  I like to use fresh squeezed grapefruit juice in my cocktails I used some here.  Combine the grapefruit juice with some good tequila blanco, fresh squeezed lime, sugar or simple syrup, and a splash of club soda, or my favorite, Fever Tree Sparkling Pink Grapefruit soda and you’ve got yourself a tasty Paloma.  I love a little splash of  Cointreau (or Grand Marnier or Triple Sec) in my margaritas so I added a splash to this drink too.  Yummy! Yummy! Yummy!  You don’t have to add it if you don’t want to though.

So simple and so refreshing.  The Paloma is a perfect summertime drink.  Grab some chips and guacamole and enjoy this drink. Cheers!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 oz. fresh squeezed red grapefruit juice
  • 2 oz. tequila blanco
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • 1/2 oz. simple syrup
  • 1/2 oz. Cointreau (or Grand Marnier or Triple Sec)
  • Fever Tree Sparkling Pink Grapefruit (or club soda)
  • Salt or sugar rim, if desired (I like to add lime zest to it)

Instructions

  1. Combine a little lime zest with salt or sugar (your preference) for a rimmer. Wet the glass rim and dip in salt or sugar and set aside while making the cocktail.
  2. Combine all ingredients except Fever Tree or club soda in cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into a glass filled with some ice. Top with club soda.

Notes

*I prefer to use Fever Tree pink grapefruit but Topo Chico carbonated mineral water is also great in this drink.
